how to say “excuse me ” in japanese

hello minna san , when you come to japan and have some troubles, needs help or want make question, you need start the conversation with polite way. so what you will do?
there is a kind and convenient word to start a conversation.
this word is “sumimasen” ( すみません) in hiragana. we use it as “excuse me”. in another situation it will mean apologize.
also it can make the sentence more polite.
for example “eki heno ikikata wo oshiete kudasai”
in hiragana you can write えき への いきかた を おしえて ください。”
its mean : “please can  you tell me the way to go to station” ( the words explanations are in the end of text)
but if you want to be  more polite  you can add “sumimasen ” in the  beggin of sentece. for example : “sumimasen eki heno ikikata wo oshiete kudasai”
from now you learned this new word, try to use it when you start a conversation with a japanese, it will be good and help you more.
